Pendulum Test
The pendulum test employs a device called a pendulum skid resistance tester to assess the dynamic coefficient of friction. This coefficient reflects the friction between two objects when at least one is in motion. The results are crucial for evaluating the slip resistance of a floor surface.
Measuring the Dynamic Coefficient of Friction (CoF) with a Pendulum Tester is the original slip resistance testing method established by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in the UK. It is one of the two methods officially recognized by the HSE and is regarded as the most effective way to determine if floors are suitable for use (the other method being SlipAlert).
The Pendulum Tester complies with European Standard BS EN 16165 and British Standards BS 7976 and BS EN 13036-4:2003, and it must be operated according to these standards and the UK Slip Resistance Group Guidelines (Issue 5, 2016). This method is preferred by both the HSE and the UKSRG for in-situ slip testing.
The HSE recommends the Pendulum Slip Test as a "reliable and accurate test," provided it is conducted by a trained and competent individual.
As a fully portable testing solution, it allows for precise slip testing at specific locations, such as the site of a fall. The test is efficient and can be carried out with minimal disruption to normal business operations.
Additionally, the Rz Surface Roughness test measures the roughness of the surface and should support the pendulum assessment, as it provides valuable insights into a floor’s ability to handle contaminants. Together, these tests are recognized as offering the most accurate measure of pedestrian slip resistance in real-world conditions. All testing equipment is accompanied by the necessary UKAS calibration certification.
Slip Alert test
The pendulum test employs a device called a pendulum skid resistance tester to assess the dynamic coefficient of friction. This coefficient reflects the friction between two objects when at least one is in motion. The results are crucial for evaluating the slip resistance of a floor surface.
As the new British Standard for floor testing and a global standard in slip prevention, SlipAlert was developed by Dr. Malcolm Bailey, a former chair of both the British and European Standards Committees focused on slip measurement.
SlipAlert offers a quicker alternative to traditional slip testing, correlating directly with Pendulum Test Values and the Dynamic Coefficient of Friction (CoF) to deliver a reliable slip risk assessment. This method can be applied in both wet and dry conditions.
SlipTest translates readings into the same slip potential classifications used by the Pendulum Test, ensuring consistent monitoring of slip risk. Results indicate a low slip potential for values of 36 and above, moderate risk for scores between 25 and 35, and high slip potential for scores from 0 to 24.
SlipAlert is one of only two British Standard methods for floor slip testing. With 25 years of experience and valuable customer input, we help determine the most suitable method for each specific environment.
The Rz surface roughness test complements the SlipAlert assessment by providing additional insights into a floor's ability to manage contaminants.
Together, these tests offer the most accurate evaluation of pedestrian slip resistance in situ.
All testing equipment is accompanied by the necessary calibration and accuracy certifications.
